Explanation
- The relief was originally modelled for a memorial in the Academy of Fine Art in Milan to the Italian painter Andrea Appiani (1754-1817), known as the painter of the Graces. The Graces are supporting each other in sorrow at the painter’s death and find consolation in Cupid’s music.
