Baptismal Font. Hercules and Hebe. Profile portraits of Georg Zoëga and others, C66r
  • Production Date

    , 1805
  • Type of Work / Object

    Drawing

Explanation

  • The drawing differs from by far the greater part of Thorvaldsen’s drawings in that the motifs here are subordinate to an architectural sketch done by someone else. The architect Carl Frederik Stanley was responsible for the elevation of the font with four reliefs on which Thorvaldsen worked from 1805. During the same period, portraits, including satirical sketches such as one of these Zoëga profiles and mythological motifs were of no less an importance in Thorvaldsen’s repertoire. The paper also shows marks suggesting it was used to test brushes.
