Explanation

  • Schiller is regarded as one of the greatest classical German poets. He was born in what is today known as the State of Baden-Württemberg, the capital of which, Stuttgart, wished to commemorate its famous citizen. Thorvaldsen was appointed to make the memorial monument and in 1839 the bronze statue was unveiled in the old palace square in the centre of the city, where it is still to be seen today.
