Explanation
- In Thorvaldsen’s day the basalt statue was part of the collection of the cardinal, theologian, and historian Stefano Borgia (1731 – 1804) in the Museo Borgiano. Thorvaldsen’s good friend from his earliest years in Rome, the archaeologist Georg Zoëga (1755-1809), was a close acquaintance of Borgia.
