Bronze statuette

Imagine a finely laid banqueting table with the guests around it, when suddenly someone lifts the lid of the little figure. The top is now no longer the head with the pointed hat, but a phallus. The element of surprise is an important part of this bronze statuette, which might have been part of a table decoration for an unruly feast in the age of the Emperor Nero. It testifies to the age’s freer attitude to the erotic and is one of the more curious objects in Thorvaldsen’s collection of antiquities.
